Maude was a demonstrator for the Calumet Baking Powder company. She demonstrated baking with their products all over the eastern and southern US, and was the one who sold the Calumet contract to the Greenbriar Hotel in West Virginia.

She met Clarence King, who was to be her husband, through her job as well. He was a grocer in Covington, Kentucky, and she met him while demonstrating her baking with Calumet.

"Uncle Robert "Bobby" Holmes was killed by Uncle Will Rials brother, Gale Esco Rials. They were in the woods behind the church [don't know which church] and there was an argument. Apparently Esco had recently had a man quit working for him and Uncle Bobby had hired him. Esco thought that Uncle Bobby had stolen him away from him. Aunt Vonelle said that Uncle Bobby didn't know that the man had been working for Esco. Anyway, Uncle Will was involved in it somehow. Aunt Vonelle said that Uncle Will had one of them by the arm trying to stop them and received a bullet hole through his coat sleeve. It is also true that Grandma Cora Price never spoke of it to her sister, Aunt Matt Holmes Rials because they decided that it was better left unspoken. Aunt Vonelle did not know what became of Esco Rials for killing him but that it was "maybe" self defense. This happened in the Topeka community in Mississippi." He was buried in Sartinville Cemetery, Walthall County, Mississippi.
