Macon
County Citizen - Oglethorpe, Ga. December 6, 1907
DEATH OF HON. H. M. KAIGLER - Hon. Henry M. Kaigler breathed his last at his home in Oglethorpe Sunday morning, sinking into the sleep of the just, the end of mortality and the beginning of immortality. He had been feeble the last few years of his life, though remarkably active for one of his years. His last sickness was of short duration, a complication of afflictions blasting the grand old oak that had endured the storms and sunshine of 79 years. Mr. Kaigler was one of the oldest and most generally beloved citizens of Oglethorpe and Macon County. He spent most of his years in this county, moving to Oglethorpe about 15 years ago. He has always enjoyed the confidence and esteem of his fellow citizens and has been elected to many honorable offices, among them the school commissionership of Macon County, which he held without opposition 20 years up to his death. He was also Mayor of Oglethorpe several years. He took a deep interest in the elevation of mankind, putting his whole heart into the great cause of education. He was a Christian, a life long member of the Methodist Church, devout and deeply pious. He was an honorable member of the Masonic order and was one of the defenders of the Lost Cause in the Sixties. He never betrayed a friend nor abused any enemy. He lived at peace with the world and left a good name that his loved ones will always remember with pride and an example that any of us will do ourselves honor to emulate. Perfectly resigned to his Master's will, he confidently awaited the final summons, often telling his friends how willing and ready he was to go. The funeral occurred Monday in the Oglethorpe Cemetery. The ceremonies at the residence were impressively conducted by his friend and companion, Rev. J. S. Elmore and his remains were interred with Masonic honors. Mr. Kaigler left a wife, Mrs. Lucy Kaigler and three children, Mrs. Julia Nelson of Macon, Mrs. J. B. Gerald of Tampa, Fla., and Mr. J. H. Kaigler of Oglethorpe, to whom the sympathy of a host of sorrowing friends goes out. [Note: Henry M. Kaigler - Co. I 4 Ga. Inf.
